The listings problem

Why remote job listings in Canada can be misleading

The Canadian remote job market has a transparency problem. Many listings labelled remote are not fully remote. Here is what to watch for.

Hybrid Disguised as Remote

The listing says: “Remote-friendly” or “flexible work”

What it often means: Hybrid role requiring 2–3 office days per week.

How to check: Ask: “Is this fully remote, or are there required in-person days?”

Province Restrictions

The listing says: “Fully remote anywhere in Canada”

What it often means: Restricted to specific provinces (often Ontario).

How to check: Check the application form for province requirements before applying.

Required In-Person Events

The listing says: “Fully remote with team gatherings”

What it often means: Mandatory quarterly in-person events.

How to check: Ask: “How many in-person days per year? Who covers travel?”

Time-Zone Restrictions

The listing says: “Fully async culture”

What it often means: Synchronous meetings on Pacific or Eastern time.

How to check: Ask: “What are core working hours? Tied to a specific time zone?”

Find your pattern

Are you a Remote Seeker?

Remote Seeker is one of five career patterns we use to describe how a Canadian job search is behaving. You might be in it if…

You have applied to remote roles but rarely hear back
You keep finding out “remote” jobs require office days
You are not sure which boards actually post real remote roles
You have been ghosted after asking “is this truly remote?”
You do not have a list of Canadian remote-friendly companies
You are not sure how to position your résumé for remote roles
When the search is set on genuine remote work — but the target market isn’t yet clear. This is a working pattern seen when someone filters for remote or cross-border roles first, yet the role, the employment model, and the remote positioning underneath aren’t defined. The Remote Seeker career pattern
A working pattern, not a permanent identity. It describes a situation you are in right now, and it changes as your target and your evidence change.
